It was a toss-up between taking a red-eye Saturday night or getting in late afternoon Saturday and having a little time to reset my internal clock before the conference begins, so I went for the earlier Saturday option (the air fare was also considerably less).

So I am going to be footloose and fancy free in Columbus Saturday night--have never been to the city--and wanted to see if any one else is getting in early and is interested in getting together. Ditto any of the folks already on site.

Looks like the weather is coasting along in the 70s during the day and 50s at night, great autumn weather, and I'm really looking forward to it.

Hi K -- and everyone who might be arriving on Saturday,

We're organizing a casual gathering on Saturday night at 8 pm at the Knotty Pine--a neighborhood bar about 15 minutes from campus. Anyone is welcome to join us--just let me know. I can even pick folks up at The Blackwell.

Given that it is Columbus day weekend, it's "Experience Columbus Days" from October 10-13. Check out the website for discount deals at restaurants and attractions.

It is also the Italian Festival. And a home football game at 3:30 pm on Saturday, so campus should be quite active. Expect more than 100,000 fans on campus.

I am arriving on Sunday and would love to know if I will have time to hang out. Would love to check out Columbus if I can. Looking forward to meeting you.

Hello K,

I think you made a good choice coming in early to relax a bit before the conference and to get to see Columbus. It looks like it's going to be a lovely weekend!

Would you be interested in getting together for a conversation before the 8 p.m. meeting at the Knotty Pine on Saturday night?

I'm doing research on how journalists report on climate change and I'm hoping to talk with you about how you approach this issue. As a grad student who has been in Columbus for a little over a year, I can also give you some tips on things to see and do in the city.

Please let me know if you're free on Saturday or if there is another time during the conference we could get together.

Best regards,

Jessica

Hi Jessica --

Sorry to be getting back to you so late.

I get in at 5:30 p.m.--God willing and the planes run on time--and given I'm probably not getting a whole lot of sleep before getting on the plane at 6:15 a.m. West Coast time, it may be overly ambitious for us to speak Saturday. I probably wouldn't be all that coherent to start with.

Sunday before the conference starts might be a better bet. Maybe a late breakfast? Or a walk; I am looking forward to the brisk fall weather.

I'm actually staying at the Doubletree downtown Saturday night--closest to campus I could get given all that's going on this weekend.

My cell is 760-200-6828. Feel free to call or leave a message on what might work for you.

Looking forward to meeting you.

K
