Bio

JESSICA R. BARNES is a graduate student and teaching associate in the Department of Geography at Ohio State. She earned her B.A. in geography and English from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and minored in journalism. Jessica worked as a reporter and editor at the student newspaper and had a year-long internship as a reporter at the Telegraph-Herald in Dubuque, Iowa. She worked with the Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism this summer.

Her research interests include political ecology, media representations of environmental issues (specifically climate change), journalists’ practices and the social construction of knowledge. In 2006, she won best undergraduate student paper awards from the Geographic Perspectives on Women Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers for a paper exploring gender and home spaces and the Wisconsin Geographical Society for her research examining gender and fear of crime in Chicago. She also enjoys travel, biking and writing.
